Mombasa-Nairobi SGR Launches the Second Pair of Passenger Train

On November 1, Mombasa-Nairobi SGR constructed and operated by CRBC held its ceremony for the launch of the second pair of passenger train in Nairobi South Station. Among the attendees were Liu Xianfa- the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Economic Counselor Guo Ce, Li Qiang- CRBC Vice President and General Manager of CRBC Kenya Office, Li Quanhuai- CRBC Vice President and Chairman of Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Operation Company, An Aijun- CRBC Vice President, General Manager of Nairobi-Maraba SGR Project and Vice President of Mombasa-Nairobi SGR Project, Huang Jincan- CRBC President Assistant and General Manager of Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Operation Company, Transport Minister James Macharia, Paul Mullingar- Executive Secretary of Ministry of Transport of Kenya, Anatus Maina- Director-General of Kenya Railways and other officials, who addressed the ceremony.

Ambassador Liu Xianfa recognized the staged achievements made in the operation of Mombasa-Nairobi SGR. He noted that Mombasa-Nairobi SGR is the outcome in the early stage of China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative, and the launch of the second pair of passenger train further deepens the cooperation between the governments of two countries, and promotes the friendship, making it a joint undertaking for both countries to achieve shared growth through discussion and collaboration.

Li Quanhuai- CRBC Vice President and Chairman of Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Operation Company noted that the Operation Company will continue to connect with the regional economic trades and transactions with Kenya and other countries in East Africa, accelerate the localization and benefit the society and people in Kenya with Chinese technologies with the focus placed on high standard, high speed, high efficiency and safety.

The Transport Minister James Macharia highly praised the role of Mombasa-Nairobi SGR in promoting Kenya’s economy. He hoped that the cooperation between Kenya and China could be further deepened to connect the ports in western Kenya with the port in Indian Ocean in Mombasa as soon as possible to fuel the economic take-off of Kenya.

At 15:30, Ambassador Liu Xianfa and Minister James Macharia shook the national flag of Kenya jointly, and the train started. On the platform, people from all walks of life and mainstream media in Kenya jointly witnessed the launch of the second pair of passenger train, and all the Kenya friends sang and danced to celebrate this exciting moment.

Since it was opened on May 31 this year, despite of numerous difficulties and challenges brought by two elections, Mombasa-Nairobi SGR has launched a total of 304 trains and transported over 420,000 person-times of passengers, with the daily passenger throughput of 2,750 person-times and the average occupancy rate of 92%. Moreover, it has transported 131,500 tons of disaster-relief grains.
