First Steel Box Girder of Maputo Bridge Erected

On October 1 of the 68th anniversary of the National Day, the first steel box girder of Maputo Bridge undertaken by CRBC was successfully erected with the joint efforts from all the construction personnel. It can be regarded as a nice gift for welcoming the National Day holiday.

Among the attendees were Carlos Mattie- Minister of National Engineering Ministry of Mozambique, Silva Magaia- President of the Owner Maputo Sul, GUAFF- the Supervisor, and leaders of Mozambique Office. Local media flocked to this occasion, and noticias- the largest official newspapers in Mozambique reported this occasion on its first edition on the next day.

For Maputo Bridge, 3m tall and 25.6m wide orthotropic deck slab streamlined flat steel box girders are adopted. A total of 57 girders are set for the bridge with the total weight of about 8,000t. The steel box girders for Maputo Bridge were transported to the construction site after being fabricated and painted by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. in its base in Nantong of Jiangsu Province, and were then hoisted section by section with cables and erected in a rotating manner. According to the overall construction schedule, the steel box girders of Maputo Bridge are planned to be erected in early November, and all the girders will be connected by the end of December.

Maputo Bridge is the largest span suspension bridge undertaken by CRBC in Africa, and will become Maputo’s landmark building after completion, which is of great significance for the economic development of Mozambique and even the whole southern Africa. Maputo Bridge attracts extensive attention from domestic and international media, and the Project was also granted the “Fulton” Award, one of the highest awards in construction industry in southern Africa, as well as other national and provincial awards successively.
